Questions to ask a Bullmastiff Breeder

You should always consult a Licensed Veterinarian first for medical and health issues.  Only a Licensed Veterinarian will be able to properly diagnose and treat your Bullmastiff.

What is Bloat:

Treatment - What are the Options?

Symptoms that your Bullmastiff may be suffering from bloat:

  • swollen stomach
  • tries to vomit, but cannot - gagging
  • increased heart rate
  • pale mucous membranes
  • becomes lethargic or excessive pacing
  • excessive salivating and panting
  • excessive stretching
  • crying

If your Bullmastiff expresses the above symptoms - don't delay - get them to the Emergency Room!   This is life threatening and a very painful death for your Bullmastiff.  Is this a congenital defect?  The latest research wants to point it that way.   And some Bullmastiff Breeders have silently questioned if "certain lines" may be more prone to bloating.  Either way, the environment is a very strong influence that can induce bloating.  Some safety cautions you should be aware of include:

  • water down your Bullmastiff's food for at least 30 minutes before feeding or if you must feed dry food, withhold water for at least an hour after eating.  Bullmastiffs like to gulp up water with air after they eat, and if they have dry kibble sitting in their stomachs, that just invites gas buildup.
  • do not exercise your Bullmastiff for at least 3 hours before and 3 hours after eating.   Your Bullmastiff should be calm and rested before and after every meal.
  • feed at least two - preferably three small meals a day.  A Bullmastiff with a stuffed stomach, is not a happy Bullmastiff.
